“We Are the Fruit Bowl”

They [HUD] only gave a small percent [of the HOPE VI grant] for translating languages. I think it was one percent of the budget, and I said “That's impossible for us” [and the HUD staff person said]: “Oh you just need to translate it into Spanish” and I go “no!” and he goes “No? What do you mean, no?” [I said] “There's eighteen different languages!” and it just blew the whole room. They could not comprehend it. We are one community and we are a mixture of people. We are the fruit bowl.
