ABSTRACT

A supportive manager should also be sensitive to opportunities for developing self-confidence in their staff through, for example, delegation, staff development, appraisal or coaching. Having self-confidence or belief in yourself as a manager is vital in health and social care. The four basic building blocks of caring leadership and management are personal awareness, team awareness, goal awareness and contextual awareness. Nevertheless, even with such uncertainty and change, the basic building blocks of leading, managing and caring can form a firm foundation from which to start. Understanding the diversity of a workforce is therefore a central part of any manager’s role. Increasing the workforce diversity is not only the right thing to do, it also reduces turnover rates and absenteeism among minority groups. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
