ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to the concept of coaching. It focuses on developing a coaching style of management in health and social care work. For some time there has been confusion over the differences and the similarities between coaching and mentoring. Three approaches to coaching were explored which may relate to any manager in health and social care: the First 90 Days, which enhances the experience and contribution of a new member of staff; the GROW model, which can be aligned to staff development; and the Comprehensive Conflict Coaching model, which can be used to help resolve conflict. Once these initial ground rules have been established, it is necessary to assure the person being coached of confidentiality, so that they feel comfortable exploring any sensitive issues. There are several limitations to coaching which need to be recognised in relation to either the coach, the person being coached, or the purpose and function of the coaching.
