ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explore what the key challenges are for managers and leaders, and how a sustainable approach can be developed to secure the continuity of effective services for those who need them. Managers also routinely have to deal with controversial situations, unhappy workers, disappointed service users, and uncertain futures. The caring manager-as-leader must therefore acknowledge the wider context they work within and help people to see themselves as part of the future – however uncertain that future may feel. Information and communications technology advances are therefore opening up new possibilities for managing care more efficiently and changing the way in which we conceptualise service management and delivery. Inspiring others to come along in a new direction is a key part of both leadership and management, and often a little creativity is required to see what that new direction might be and to negotiate the unfolding journey.
