ABSTRACT

To write about dramaturgy in post-revolution Iran demands a comprehensive grasp of Iranian theatre tradition from past to present, as well as a broad and diverse understanding of political and religious dynamics in contemporary Iranian society. Providing such an overview of the contemporary challenges and accomplishments of the dramaturgical tradition in Iran can help us shed more light on the existing paradoxes and prospects for its practitioners, researchers, and even authorities. Iranian contemporary theatre has been developing and flourishing in a country where revolution, war, economic sanctions, and cultural transformations have all marked its recent history. 1
