ABSTRACT

When talking about translation, the United Kingdom has the lowest rate of published works in translation within the EU, estimated at only around 2–6 percent of annual books published, including fiction and non-fiction. (Compare this number with statistics from the rest of Europe: Germany, 12.4 percent; Spain, 24–8 percent; France, 15–27 percent; and Turkey, 40 percent). 2 Literary translations in Britain make up around a fifth of this very low figure – a fraction. 3
