ABSTRACT

This chapter surveys a range of supporting technologies, such as GPS, image recognition, and social media. With GPS now a standard feature on smartphone and tablet devices, the availability of application programming interfaces (APIs) allow developers to integrate with Google Maps and other navigation tools for delivering tailored learning content. The chapter identifies future trends and innovations that will expand both the capabilities and use of context-aware mobile technologies and applications. Whilst mobile device cameras have long been used to capture images from our surroundings, image recognition technology is broadening the scope of use beyond merely storing or sharing static images. The chapter discusses about the rapid adoption of physiometric, medical and cognitive sensors that could inform the context for both learning and health-related activities. Understanding the implications of context-aware learning from government, industry and educational settings shows commonality and transferability across multiple sectors of society.
