ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a learner-centred or human-centred design perspective that incorporates design research methodologies. It employs a design research approach by graduate students to investigate specific learning contexts through the design of contextually aware mobile learning augmented reality (AR) prototypes in education. The chapter describes two cases of the application of design research methods to the mobile learning context, particularly focusing on the design and prototyping of two context-aware applications to demonstrate the importance of analysis of contextual factors for mobile design. It presents the mobile learning context which incorporate both informal and formal learning activities and experiences requiring deep understanding of how, when and where the intervention may be used cross-context. The design research team working on the National Zoo project elected to represent their experience with teachers, zoo staff and high school students.
