ABSTRACT

What is the source of urban growth and of sustainable urban development? This question has received continuous attention from researchers and policy makers for many decades. Cities all over the world are in a state of flux and exhibit complex dynamics. As cities grow, planners devise:

complex systems to deal with food supplies on an international scale, water supplies over long distances and local waste disposal, urban traffic management systems and so on; […] and the quality of all such urban inputs defines the quality of life of urban dwellers. (Science Museum, 2004)
