ABSTRACT

Exactly 100 years ago Wertheimer (1912) published his paper on so-called phi motion, which many consider to be the start of Gestalt psychology as an important school of thought. This historical occasion has been the impetus for two extensive reviews of the empirical and theoretical contributions of Gestalt psychology regarding visual perception (Wagemans et al., 2012a, 2012b), and for Lothar Spillmann's efforts to bring Wertheimer's seminal work under the attention of contemporary scientists again, by publishing good English translations of the original German papers, along with some additional chapters to clarify their meaning and importance (Spillmann, 2012).
