ABSTRACT

The receptive field and its psychophysical analog, labeled perceptive field by Spillmann and colleagues (Jung and Spillmann, 1970; Spillmann, 1971; Spillmann et al., 1987), are fundamental concepts in the study of visual processing. This chapter examines the relationship between receptive and perceptive fields in the context of their historical development and with particular attention to the related assumptions that have been made about the nature of visual processing and representations.
