ABSTRACT

Israel is situated on the eastern Mediterranean Sea coast, and has a common border with four countries: Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. Israel's area (inclusive of the new areas that were added during the 1967 and 1973 wars), is 21.501 km. Its total population is 4.4 million, with roughly 83% Jews and 17% Arabs and Druse. As an immigrant's country Israel has a relatively high proportion of nonnative citizens. Only 55% of the Jewish population was born in Israel. Hebrew is the language used by 83% of the Jews, and Arabic is used by 95% of the non-Jewish population. However, English is taught at all schools from elementary through high school as well as the universities, and English-speaking people can use English for the conduct of their business and other needs.
