ABSTRACT

I took delight in the 1993 presidential election of Bill Clinton over George Bush. Clinton had advocated for gays and lesbians to openly serve in the United States Armed Forces and sparked national debate around the issue. Although he failed to secure a safer space for America’s gay and lesbian soldiers (something that would not occur until 2010) the discourse regarding the gays in the military issue proved benefi cial for gay liberation politics in general, and for gay male athletes in particular.
