ABSTRACT
As long as there have been schools, educational leaders have taken risks and made sacrifices to give their students opportunities that might otherwise have been beyond their reach. The history of schooling in the United States is filled with wide-ranging stories of leaders who have entered their work in the spirit of generously offering their hard-won skills to those in need, essentially fulfilling what today might be regarded as an imperative toward equity, diversity, and social justice.
