ABSTRACT

In an edited volume on the relevance of Hurricane Katrina to education, Brown, Dancy, and Davis (2007) drew upon ancient texts in a prophetic declaration. The authors predicted that—should educators fail to adequately address disparities at the intersection of race and education—the Gulf coast would not be plagued by water but “the fire next time” (p. 69). On April 20, 2010, fire killed 11 platform workers and injured 17 others when a drilling rig operated by British Petroleum (BP) exploded in the Gulf of Mexico just 41 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The result was the most massive oil spill in marine history.
