Trade in services and the public's health

In the current economic climate, considerable tension exists between states’ economic policies and their stated social goals. Many EU member states have made decisions to drastically cut public spending, including health budgets. These cuts, as well as Europe-wide measures to instill “fiscal discipline,” have been justified in many countries on the grounds that they are essential if states are to bring down government debt and end economic uncertainty (European Member States 2012).
