ABSTRACT

Why write a book on analyzing digital fiction? Twenty-five years after the publication of the first hypertext fictions, we might assume that a substantial body of in-depth analyses of digital fiction exists. In our many discussions as members of the Digital Fiction International Network 1 , however, we established that it does not. Indeed, we were struck by how few systematic analyses of digital fiction are to be found. We realized that while authors have been experimenting with different modes and media, creating different structures and forms, and writing in different genres and styles, the scholarship surrounding digital fiction hasn’t yet caught up. We concluded that the field needs more analyses of digital fiction and more replicable approaches through which they can be methodically analyzed.
