ABSTRACT

Assessment is part of the teacher's job. It can focus on the individual learner, the learning community, the institution, or the educational system as a whole. The final purposes and assessment practices in education depend on the theoretical framework of the practitioners and researchers, their assumptions and beliefs about the nature of the human mind, the origin of knowledge, and the process of learning. Assessment is often divided using the following distinctions: formative and summative; objective and subjective; criterion-referenced, norm-referenced, and impassive; informal and formal. Functions of assessment can be different also: assessment to a) give grades (tests the outcome of education), b) give feedback to learners and teachers in order to support the learning process, c) prognoses about future learning and success.
