ABSTRACT

This chapter complements the other contributions to this volume by examining the theme of musical performance and urban social change in a setting outside the city. More specifically, the chapter examines audience perspectives at a popular music festival that occurred outside of the metropolitan area of Berlin, Germany. Considering that in contemporary times, social life has become more individualized and fluid, the question is raised as to whether music performances at popular music festivals can still generate a sense of collectivity, and also to what extent this sense of collectivity, while occurring in a less urban space, is influenced by social activities occurring within the postindustrialized city.
