ABSTRACT

China's continuing economic and diplomatic dynamism, evidenced most recently in the new leadership's efforts to engage globally, has prompted tremendous speculation about the geopolitical implications of the trajectory of China's exceptional economic growth. As scholars search for theoretical and empirical models with which to make sense of China's rise and its relations with the existing powers, it may be constructive to explore the participation of China in one of the most important international economic institutions, the World Trade Organization (WTO).
