ABSTRACT

The development of teacher education in Malaysia is closely related to the socio-economic and political development of the country as well as being influenced by the global trends on educational changes. With the advancement of information communication technology in the context of globalization, schools are only one of the many educational agencies in society. With the increase in sources of information and the rapid access to information, teachers have to cope with the problem of selection and prioritization of relevant information for themselves and their pupils ( Thomas, 2000). In this chapter, an in-depth analysis of some Malaysian reforms and practices will show the influence of global trends on teacher education with reference to 1) the patterns and control of teacher education, 2) approaches to the curriculum of teacher education and 3) the preparation of teachers for a multicultural society.
