ABSTRACT

The Health Education Division in the Ministry of Health was established in 1953 to administer health education activities. Government policy in health education places emphasis on the individual and the community. There are ten major health promotion programmes currently in operation. These cover a number of issues including family planning, environmental sanitation, provision of safe water and mental health. Family planning and the control of communicable diseases are important issues. The chapter describes the range of personnel involved in the delivery of health education. Of the various health education strategies employed, those focusing on school children are considered especially important. It is considered essential that health education strategies in local communities take into account the level of education and the culture of the people. New emphases include the development of resources, drug education, sex education, and AIDS education.
