ABSTRACT

Summary: The chapter reflects on different types of education for new technologies, starting from the introduction of cars into two fictitious countries. What are the needs of a society in the throes of the impact of the ubiquitous microtechnology? The authors were not briefed on ‘new technologies’ but most chose information technology or informatics. The focus on things and information can lead us away from the essentially human aspects of education: caring for one’s ‘neighbour’. ‘Education for’ was also left to authors, who interpreted in a variety of ways. The authors must have their say. The book is divided into four sections: the basis and needs for education for the new technologies; national perspectives, case studies of particular initiatives, and questions about education for the new technologies. Guidance is also provided on chapters relating to particular areas and aspects of education.
