ABSTRACT

Summary: Informatics is introduced in the Danish school system in order to provide the pupils with skills for applying and assessing the new technologies and also to benefit from the educational opportunities inherent in the new media.

So far informatics is an optional course in primary and lower secondary education, and an integrated part of curriculum in upper secondary education.

Currently much research and development work is done in Danish schools to determine the best way to introduce education for the new technologies into the curriculum.

The Danish educational system is characterized by a decentralized development, with the result that there is no national plan as regards curricular matters, in-service education of teachers, purchase of hardware and software, or development of educational software.

Recently the Danish Centre for Education and Information Technology has submitted a proposal for a national plan, suggesting a development and enlargement of the activities over three years. The plan suggests the development of the local centres and national co-ordination of activities.
