ABSTRACT

Summary: This chapter outlines the history, characteristics, issues and future directions of learning strategies. The chapter examines learning strategies’ evolution in the field of instructional technology, their definition and characteristics, the types of learning strategies, the problems and questions concerning the research and utilization of learning strategies, and the directions for the future research and discussion of learning strategies in instructional technology. As a ‘new’, process-oriented instructional technology, learning strategies offer hope for improving student learning through student acquisition and control of their mental and emotional processes.
