ABSTRACT

Home advantage is used as a term that describes the superior performance of teams playing at home comparatively to away teams. This phenomenon has been widely studied, particularly, in association football (Pollard, 1986; Clarke and Norman, 1995; Jacklin, 2005; Boyko et al., 2007) and it has been explained by numerous factors related to game location (crowd and travel effect, familiarity), physiological states of players, coaches and referees, etc. (Carron et al., 2005). However, the studies looking for cause-and-effect relationship did not provide a clear insight into a possible contribution of each of these factors on the team's home and away results.
