ABSTRACT

The goal of the American Teacher Corps programme is threefold: to strengthen the educational opportunities available to children in areas having concentrations of low-income families; to encourage colleges and universities to broaden their programme of teacher education; and to encourage institutions of higher education and local educational agencies to improve programmes of training and retraining for teachers, teacher aides and other educational personnel. This chapter discusses the following in detail: the project’s historical development; the role of the federal government concerning Teacher Corps; the programme’s temporary systems approach; the programme’s components and its delineators; action toward the future; and a summary of the status quo.
