ABSTRACT

Education is only one of a range of factors influencing agricultural development. Much of the controversy over its role has resulted from exaggerated claims for what education can achieve. As Harbison 1 has pointed out, ‘education becomes a relevant factor in economic growth only when it is properly integrated with all other factors in development’. By itself education can achieve relatively little. Mosher 2 only lists education under his five ‘accelerators’ for agricultural development rather than under what he terms the ‘essentials’. This is a clear indication of its role as a catalyst of development rather than a basic ingredient.
