ABSTRACT

East European universities belong to the great family of European universities moulded during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the En-lightment. Prague University was founded in 1348, Cracow University in 1364, Pecs University in 1367. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries universities were founded in Vilna (1578), Budapest (1635) and Lwow (1661). In 1755, in the cultural atmosphere of the Enlightment, Moscow University was established, and during the nineteenth century universities in Warsaw (1816), Petersburg (1819), Jassy (1860), Bucharest (1864), and Cluj (1872) emerged.
