ABSTRACT

There is, at present, no movement in the Soviet Union pointing towards a substantial reform of higher education. There have been no cases of student unrest to indicate that something is basically wrong with the system. Soviet higher education approached the fiftieth anniversary of the October Revolution and the one-hundredth anniversary of Lenin's birthday celebrating its own perfection. The question arises though: how similar are the tasks and aims of higher education in the Soviet Union to those of ‘capitalist’ countries? And are the problems being handled more successfully in the USSR?
