ABSTRACT
The modern American university is sui generis', it is an institution characterized by its own forces. That it can be epitomized in this way is a tribute to the evolutionary process by which the university developed and acquired its distinctive flavour. ‘Evolution’ is a key word. What we understand to be a university is the product of several historical transformations and mutations, each of which — accompanied by a specific educational philosophy — emerged in response to particular social needs.
