ABSTRACT

There has been an upsurge of serious interest in childhood in the last 15 years. That upsurge has been evident across public policy, academia, the arts and certainly in museums as well as throughout the general population. In the UK, New Labour initiatives have placed the child and the family firmly at the heart of public policy. Childhood Studies has emerged as a major academic discipline, whilst interest in family history has expanded significantly.
