ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine the contours of Taiwan’s economic history as a ROC (Republic of China) province and as the seat of the ROC’s émigré regime and the economic miracle that was launched with the help of the ROC’s strongest ally, the United States. We meet the technocrat actors from both the ROC and the US who helped to the promote and finance the miracle and then create a consumer electronics sector that in turn helped produced a strong IT sector. Only then can we understand the investment of the ROC’s private sector in the “open for business and investment” Peoples Republic of China of the mid 1990s and early 2000s.
