ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the development of a training course in community storytelling designed for (and in collaboration with) people with learning and communication difficulties.

History

The idea for the project grew from a storytelling group which ran in north London for a year, with nine verbal individuals. They all enjoyed the experience of telling all sorts of stories: traditional, fictional (Wizard of Oz) and personal – memories of the war and of childhood exploits (Grove, 2004). Funding was then secured to take this work forward and explore the possibility of a storytelling company who could go out and run workshops, perform at festivals and events, and find new ways of making familiar tales relevant and meaningful.
