ABSTRACT

While certain aspects of global health research governance (GHRG) have received substantial attention, notably in the area of intellectual property as it applies to drug development, there have been few attempts to examine the array of governance functions necessary in the critical areas of research investment and priority-setting, equitable partnerships and capacity-building. Research governance faces many similar (and some different) challenges to that of global health governance. Ultimately, the products of research form the foundations for sustainable health improvement and human development. Thus research, and how it is governed, has ramifications far beyond the research world; research can play a critical role in conceptualizing issues, framing policy debates and setting policy agendas.
