ABSTRACT

In the architectural profession there is increasing pressure to integrate new environmental technologies into building design. Although architects traditionally had knowledge of sustainable practices, by the 1960s energy design had become the responsibility of the engineering profession. However, new laws and ethical concerns are now returning the technical side of sustainability to architects. In spite of this, much current building practice has been slow to respond to the demands of sustainable environmental design within a creative architectural discourse (Altomonte, 2009).
