ABSTRACT

Since the 1990s, China has been implementing cultural quality education in higher education. Initially general education was introduced as a major form of cultural quality education from the developed countries, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Since then a wave of general education has swept over universities in the mainland, general education research has received critical attention and a large body of research on both theory and application has been pub lished. However, in this large body of literature, most of the studies approach general education from the perspectives of curricular design and delivery, and researchers are mostly concerned about how to achieve the intended objectives of general education in helping students gain comprehensive knowledge and develop a sound mind and healthy character through curricular activities. Little attention seems to be given to university culture and its impact on general education. I believe that university culture is one of the core elements for the university, which will have both a direct and indirect impact on student growth in various forms and through different channels. This chapter attempts to explore the interdependent relationship between university culture and general education and ways of improving general education from the perspective of the establishment of a university culture.
