ABSTRACT

Wellness may be regarded as a global, broad social phenomenon whereby an increasing number of people are assuming responsibility for their own health and well-being. Three megatrends guarantee the continued growth in demand for wellness, namely: (1) the ageing of the world’s population, (2) failing and disintegrating health-care systems and (3) increasing globalisation and awareness of various health treatments. These (health) trends are also discernible in the Netherlands and people wish to remain healthy and continue to be active in society.
