ABSTRACT

This short case study comes from Iceland which, along with the Nordic countries more generally, builds its tourism on the role of nature and natural phenomena (Hall et al., 2009; Jóhannesson et al., 2010; Jóhannesson and Huijbens, 2010; Sæpórsdóttir, 2010). The natural variations specific to Iceland are the country’s abundant geothermal resources and vast tracks of land devoid of signs of human habitation, or what has been termed wilderness (Sæpórsdóttir et al., 2011). With most people coming to Iceland to experience nature (Icelandic Tourist Board, 2012) and varying degrees of wilderness, my focus in this case study is on how these can be perceived as delivering well-being.
