ABSTRACT
What can the Chilean experience teach us about water markets and sustainable development? Chile’s experience is uniquely valuable to help answer the following question in international water debates: Is a free-market approach to recognizing water as an economic good compatible with the broader and long-term goals of integrated water resources management? I will argue that the Chilean experience shows that the answer is no. Other economic approaches, however, including market instruments, are nonetheless essential.
