ABSTRACT

The multidimensional nature of poverty enjoys broad consensus. However there is an ongoing debate regarding the suitability of bringing together the multiple indicators of deprivations into one composite index. Those against lament the potential loss of information and prefer a dashboard approach (see, for example, Ravallion, 2011). Those in favour stress that a composite index may be unavoidable when the purpose is to quantify the incidence of multiple deprivations within the same individuals (Yalonetzky, 2012).
