ABSTRACT

As we read elsewhere in this book, significant changes are occurring in the meaning and content of office work in America, ones that will change radically the lives of the workers, the form of the buildings they work in, and the urban settings within which the new workplaces are located. Importantly, these changes in office design affect not only the office interior, but go beyond even the design of the building itself. They will affect the form of American cities; skyscrapers, America’s urban hallmark for over a century, are most vulnerable to this revolution in the design and management of corporate real estate, and the generic suburban office park is next in line. The leasing agents of new towers and generic low-rise suburban buildings may not know it, but it’s likely they’re dealing in dinosaurs.
