ABSTRACT

Vietnam ’s decision to engage in fundamental renovation of the country – doimoi – has involved a shift from a centrally planned economy towards a socialist-oriented market economy where individuals, private capitalists and households are significant components of the economy alongside state and collective ownership. The economic reform process has been accompanied by numerous legal, political and social reforms, while security and foreign policies have been reshaped as well. Despite the major changes experienced in Vietnam as a result, political stability and national security have been maintained, unlike in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, while significant economic achievements have also resulted. Moreover, foreign economic cooperation has not only helped Vietnam develop its economy, but also created favourable conditions for Vietnam to strengthen its political relations with other countries, particularly the major powers, thus enhancing its role in the region and guaranteeing national security.
