ABSTRACT

The mound naturally divides itself into two unequal parts: an upper mound that is about 20 acres in size, and a lower city that encloses some 175 acres. While the site was first occupied during the Early Bronze Age (c.3200-2000 BCE), its most prosperous and heavily populated time was during the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1550 BCE). The material remains from this time, especially the fortifications, indicate that Hazor was a major Canaanite city. Unfortunately, some of the gate remains were badly damaged by the construction of the modern road that cut through the extreme southeast corner of the tell.
