Unlike the classical professions, the depth of abstract knowledge on which the practice of journalism is based is both limited and less clearly defined, while the emphasis on practical skills brings journalism closer to a craft than a profession. Although journalism has had to face a set of very specific problems inherent in its practice, the sociology of professions and occupations has juggled with providing some stable guidelines on how to characterize professions in general.1
