ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will consider the importance of play for children, and some of its key characteristics. Moyles (2010: 4) describes the complexities of discussing play as similar to ‘trying to seize bubbles’, brilliantly capturing the fascinating, fragile and transitory nature of play. Challenging though it may be, it is worthwhile for practitioners to be able to discuss play authoritatively. As practitioners appreciative of the value of play for children and knowledgeable of its benefits, we will be confident to advocate for ample play opportunities for the children in our care.
