ABSTRACT

Assessing the socio-economic value of PA benefits is generally best done at site level. Many benefits are site-specific: both the range of ecosystem services and related goods provided by a PA and the costs associated with PA management can vary significantly between sites. The context in which valuation decisions are made is also specific to a certain PA or a case. Consequently, it is important that the scope of and methods for detailed socio-economic valuation, i.e. what benefits to focus on and how, are determined based on due consideration of the context and sitespecific characteristics – including the results of a scoping assessment. A number of key questions supporting these decisions are listed below.
