ABSTRACT

Many scholars have commented on the fact that the “public are the police and the police are the public”. This is no different in Canada. Tens of thousands of citizens every year decide that they want to become police officers. Of those tens of thousands, thousands make it through the rigorous selection process and start a career as either a federal, provincial, or municipal police officer. The process from hiring to operational police officer is as diverse as Canada’s many regions. This chapter will explore the training that new police officers receive. Specifically, it will provide an overview of the different policing models and how they inform the training of newly hired police officers. The role of colleges in the training of police recruits will also be explored. Examples will be used to show how in some regions of Canada colleges have become active partners in the training of new police officers.
