ABSTRACT

How well have political science graduate programmes in the U.S. performed in preparing graduates for teaching in the field? In this chapter we find that research productivity is still the best predictor of faculty job placement at all institutions, be they primarily research or teaching institutions. Indeed, despite the existence of teaching-preparation courses at many universities, these had little effect on enhancing the placement of graduates, even at political science departments that emphasise teaching over research. Further, we find that award-winning teachers primarily completed their doctoral work at top-ranked research institutions in the country, particularly public institutions.
