ABSTRACT
Maps are one of those texts that we have become so used to that their function seems evident, obvious, and commonsense: with the advent of online street and satellite maps, such as those Google provides, they are more accessible, easier to use, and cover very nearly not only every surface of the earth, but also some deep places, too. Since the Enlightenment and global maritime navigation, maps have always been expected to represent for us a true and accurate image of the land, sea, and space, for the purposes of helping us to navigate that space. It is hard for us to conceptualize how a map may function in any other way.
